When I was in college, I discussed the study of the "Das Kapital" course with my classmates in the economics department of the university, and shared my research experience. When reading the original works of Marxism, one should pay attention to the preface, postscript, notes at the bottom of the pages and the appendix at the end of the book, as well as the content of the correspondence between Marx and Engels on "Das Kapital". But after the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was persecuted, and Bai Yu was classified as a "child of the gangster". He was detained and interrogated many times when he was young.

In 1968, Mao Zedong launched the "Go to the Countryside" movement, and Bai Yu, like thousands of educated youths, was driven to the countryside to work in the countryside. At the beginning, he did not adapt to the difficult life of "going to the countryside" and fled back to the city.

But unlike many of the generation that went through the Cultural Revolution and had family members who suffered persecution, Bai Yu seems to be more grateful for that experience. From the perspective of a psychiatrist, it is not unusual for Bai Yu, a victim, to respond positively to his perpetrator. This is one of the ways traumatized people protect themselves.
