Many memories are
painful and helpless. Memories are a wordless song. The silence makes people's
eyes dim with tears. Recalling the past events of the 7,000-person meeting, it
can be said that Mao Zedong's prediction was correct. However, the 28-day
conference completely deviated from the scheduled track, and there were many
waves, and the turbulent waves reappeared. For Mao Zedong, the dramatic turning
point and climax in the course of the congress were particularly intriguing and
unforgettable.
Discussions within the
"Twenty-One Report Drafting Committee". While extensively discussing
the draft report drafted by Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping, the conference also
formed a 21-member report drafting committee to re-discuss and revise the
report draft. This work, still presided over by Liu Shaoqi, is carried out
simultaneously with the discussions at the conference. The members of the
drafting committee were mainly the central and local leaders at that time. The
opinions and results formed by the drafting committee's discussions played a
pivotal role in the conference and would also play a decisive role in Mao
Zedong's final judgment.
The drafting committee
discussed five issues: 1. Should the first draft of the report be overturned
and start from scratch? 2. Has the opposition to decentralism grasped the main
contradiction? 3. Is the indicator high or low? 4. Reasons and responsibilities
for mistakes; 5. What are the three red flags?
For Mao Zedong, the
latter two of the five issues were naturally the most sensitive. And it was
precisely on these two issues that someone fired a cannon. On the issue of
mistakes and responsibilities over the past few years, both Liu Shaoqi and Tao
Zhu believed that the 1959 Lushan Conference only opposed the right and not the
left, which was the main source of the mistakes. Liu Shaoqi also believes that
the ideological root of these mistakes is the lack of long-term understanding
of socialist construction.
But Liu Lantao pointed
out bluntly that the reason for making mistakes in the past few years is that
the life of the party has been seriously damaged, and people dare not tell the
truth. He also bluntly stated that loyal ministers have been persecuted in
recent years, and the opposite is "horse horses and cows", that is,
watching the wind to make the rudder, bragging and flattering the horse. This
is a very serious problem and a lot of bugs are caused by this situation. When
loyal ministers were persecuted, treacherous ministers became arrogant. Liu
Lantao not only really compared Mao Zedong to the emperor, but also dared to
hold the emperor accountable.
But the one who publicly
called out Mao Zedong on this issue was Peng Zhen, then member of the Political
Bureau of the Communist Party of China, secretary of the Secretariat of the
Central Committee, and vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National
People's Congress. Peng Zhen boldly stated: Our mistakes are first of all the
responsibility of the Central Secretariat, including the Chairman, Shaoqi and
the comrades of the Central Standing Committee, including as many mistakes as
there are. Chairman Mao did not make any mistakes. The transition from three to
five years and the cafeteria were all approved by Chairman Mao. Our view of
Chairman Mao is not granite but also sedimentary rock. Chairman Mao's prestige
is either Mount Everest or Mount Tai, and it is still so high after taking away
a few tons of soil. Now there is a tendency within the party not to raise
opinions or review mistakes, and once they do, they will collapse. If one
percent or one thousandth of Chairman Mao's mistakes are not reviewed, it will
leave a bad influence on our party.
Peng Zhen's words
received tactful and implicit support from Deng Xiaoping and Liu Shaoqi.
Although Chen Boda's refutation of Peng Zhen's words later made the discussants
realize the seriousness of the problem, and Zhou Enlai cleverly smoothed things
over. In the end, the discussion did not go further on this issue, but this
open challenge of "daring to act" spread to Mao Zedong. From his
ears, one can imagine the feeling in his heart. So at the beginning of the
Cultural Revolution, it is not surprising that Mao Zedong was the first to
attack Peng Zhen, who presided over the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, and
used this to direct the fire to Peng Zhen's "backstage boss" who was
"behind the scenes".
When discussing the
Three Red Flags issue, at least four members of the Standing Committee, namely
Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and Chen Yun, had varying degrees of
reservations. However, due to Mao Zedong's prestige, it was inconvenient for
them to speak in depth. Or say some ambiguous words "tactfully" in
the past.
For example, Liu Shaoqi
said: "Three red flags that are more difficult to say", what does
that mean? That is, "the people's commune is still a bit big and dutiful.
It will be seen in the future, but it is difficult to say now." The
implication is that the people's commune was set up too early, and it has surpassed
the stage, and it expresses that people are allowed to doubt.
Chen Yun spoke frankly
during the discussion: Some issues can only be affirmed in principle. Some
people think that they are not specific and still have doubts. Doubt for
several years.
Although Zhou Enlai had
ideas, his use of the doctrine of the mean was always ingenious. When people
complained a lot about the three red flags, he suggested: In the report, we
should say a few more words about the superiority of the people's communes.
As for Deng Xiaoping, he
simply compared the People's Commune to a premature baby, which has two
meanings of "untimely birth" and "more care"; This is Deng
Xiaoping's cunning.
Discussion is one thing,
writing is another. I believe that no one in the drafting committee wants to be
Peng Dehuai's second.
The sharp words that
damaged Mao Zedong's "prestige" that were spoken out in the
discussion were either retracted or replaced with a subtle and euphemistic
statement. negative things. For example, "The revised report added the following
content when describing Mao Zedong's contribution to correcting mistakes: If
many of our comrades can better understand Mao Zedong Thought and be good at
using the methods of seeking truth from facts and investigating and researching
that Comrade Mao Zedong has always advocated, And earnestly implement the
guiding opinions put forward by Comrade Mao Zedong at every critical moment,
then some mistakes in the work in the past few years can be avoided, or can be
greatly reduced, or can be corrected more quickly after they occur. "
It is a pity that Mao
Zedong will never believe such flattery.
Where there is struggle,
there will be memory. In a struggle, you can't resist, and there's nowhere to
escape. For those in high positions, memory is the epitome of society. What is
worth remembering is always unforgettable, especially when former
comrades-in-arms suddenly became enemies, and former friendship turned into
bitter and sad hatred. Friendship also has a shelf life, and all promises have
a deadline, and this deadline is a short moment. After the shelf life, the past
vows and alliances can be said to be just a lie.
From the speeches and
discussions of the 16 members of this committee, Mao Zedong has roughly figured
out which people have begun to "slander" him for a long time, which
"close partners" or colleagues for many years have had different
dreams with him, and which so-called "loyal" His fellow travelers
have begun to evolve into his political opponents, or will part ways with him
after all.
