Qilinzi and Huagulong

Qilinzi and Huagulong

Agudengba came to Myanmar from Bangladesh with his partner Dawa, as well as his young partner hunter Chu Sanxing and his wife Xiang Qima. After the four of them set foot in Myanmar, they talked about everything along the way. The most talked about topic turned out to be the debt collectors.

Chu Sanxing said: There is an old saying circulating in Myanmar, "If a family has a skeleton dragon, it should be a debt collector." What is the meaning of this old saying?

Agudengba said: This saying is also spread in southern China. In fact, this sentence is how our ancestors taught us to recognize people. In the South Asian subcontinent, there is a folk saying that "if a family has a bone-changing dragon, it should be a debt collector", which means that there are troubled children in the family. This sentence is almost exactly the same as the saying "I hope my son will become a dragon and I hope my daughter will become a phoenix". While many people are looking forward to having a Qilin child, some families with Hua Gulong are at a loss.

Said to Chima:

My father also told me that Qilin is a traditional auspicious animal. As the saying goes: "Wherever the unicorn appears, there must be auspiciousness." The unicorn has a beautiful appearance and a gentle personality. The most important thing is to be kind to others and be willing to help others. My father said that there is a record in China's "Book of Rites" that "lin, phoenix, turtle, and dragon are called the four spirits." It can be seen that the status of Qilin can be compared with that of dragon and phoenix. Mother believes that Qilin is a descendant of dragon, which fully reflects its status.

My father said that ancient people often used Qilin to describe talented people with both ability and political integrity. If any family has a Qilin son, it will definitely be a general or a general in the future. But on the contrary, if you give birth to a Huagulong, even if you have a large number of Qilin children in your family, it may lead to the decline or decline of your family. The difference between the two can be said to be immediate.

Agudenba said:

Many common sayings are easy to understand, and they also contain many great principles for life and work. The most important thing is that proverbs come from the folk and are the crystallization of the wisdom of the working people. Every family hopes to have a smart, kind-hearted child who can make a difference in the future. Whether in China, Myanmar, Bangladesh or India, Huagulong is a negative example. Therefore, people like Qilinzi, but not Hua Gulong.

Dawa asked curiously: What is Huagulong? Is he the son of a dragon?

Agudemba replied:

According to folklore, Huagulong is a mythical beast that already exists. The "Book of Mountains and Seas" classifies him as the son of the dragon and introduces him as the greediest, cruelest and gluttonous among the nine sons of the dragon. Later, among the people, it referred to a restless son. Of course, there are many legends about Huagulong. Others believe it is a real creature. They believe that Phyllophosaurus was a four-legged animal that looked like a raw fish. This fish has an elongated body and looks like a dragon. Normally, whether on water or land, it will hide its four legs under its abdomen, and will only extend them when no one is disturbing it. It is said that many people who have seen Huagulong have seen Huagulong's ability to pretend to be dead. The purpose of this is to avoid hunting by humans. But if Huagulong is unfortunately captured by humans, once it enters the human body, it will melt human bones. Of course, this is just a relatively mysterious legend, and the existence of Huagulong has always been a mystery.

Xiang Qima smiled: No wonder there is a saying among the people that "even if there is a unicorn, it is difficult to defeat the bone-changing dragon".

Chu Sanxing also smiled: There are no monsters or monsters in the world, and there is no such beast. These are all metaphors for good boys and bad boys. As the saying goes, "If you have a dragon in your family, you will be a debt collector." This sentence actually involves the customs and habits of the South Asian subcontinent. In the eyes of the Burmese people, the naughtiest troublemaker in the family, or the child who is greedy and able to eat, will be called Huagulong by his parents. Because this kind of child has a greedy personality. Once they are greedy and get into trouble when they are young, they will become selfish, greedy, and corrupt when they grow up. Huagulong is similar to the Chinese Taotie. Although this statement has no scientific basis, it is enough to express the helplessness and heartache of parents towards their disobedient children.

Agudenba said:

Because children who are greedy, delicious, and able to eat will definitely give many parents a headache. At the same time, there will be less and less food at home, so this kind of child, called Hua Gu Long, is often called a debt collector by his parents.

Although this statement is a bit ugly, it is also a pet name given by parents to their children. In the southern part of China, Hua Gu Long has a different meaning. They still call their children "Hua Gu Long", but this has a similar meaning to "Doun Zi". It expresses the humility of his own son.

Xiang Qima smiled again:

Mr. Agudemba, do you know why Burmese people are taboo about touching children’s heads? Children cross their hands on their chests to show respect for adults. The Burmese people believe in being humble, and it is taboo to be arrogant when interacting with the Burmese people.

Xiang Qima said again:

According to Burmese Buddhist customs, before men reach adulthood, usually starting from the age of five or six, men must undergo a tonsure ceremony and enter a temple to become a monk. The time can be long or short, usually one week. Only in this way can he be considered an adult and be a good person in society. Be respected. Obviously, even if the little boy is reincarnated as a "bone dragon", he will inevitably be restrained.

Chu Sanxing laughed:

Burmese people often eat rice noodles, noodles or fried rice for breakfast, and some also drink coffee, black tea and snacks. Lunch and dinner are main meals, with rice as the main food. The characteristics of the dishes are oily, sour and spicy, and strong flavor. Various young fruits and fresh vegetable leaves are often used as side dishes and eaten with condiments. When eating, put the rice on a plate and eat it with your hands. What can those greedy, delicious and edible Burmese children eat? Even though now with the development of society, more and more people eat with knives, forks and spoons, I believe that although children in Myanmar cannot become "Qilin children", they cannot become "Huagulong".

Agudengba sang an improvised song "Qilinzi and Huagulong":

The wisdom of the ancients is not difficult to learn;

As long as you experience it carefully,

Be wise in dealing with people,

Wisdom is hidden in proverbs.

Our ancestors longed for Qilin son,

Hope that your son will be successful in virtue and ability;

Parents are taboo about Huagulong.

Worry about giving birth to debt collectors.

Life often takes detours,

Many common sayings contain philosophy;

Intelligence depends on taste,

Putting education first can solve the problem.
