Shiva's
Dual Personality
When Agudengba was traveling
in India, he unexpectedly encountered a donkey pack transport team. The old
donkey leader of the team, whom he had met before, greeted Agudengba who was
passing by.
Agudengba's donkey Mahu and
the familiar old gray donkey went to the river to drink water and take a rest.
The old donkey told
Agudengba the legendary story about Lord Shiva:
Since Shiva had a different
skin color from other gods when he was born, his appearance was more eerie and
terrifying, and few gods dared to approach him. Therefore, Shiva had a
relatively withdrawn personality and went to the snowy Himalayas to practice
alone.
Shiva is often depicted as a
murderous demon, which is his ferocious side. and is known as the god of
destruction of the world. Shiva was worshiped as early as the Indus Valley
Civilization. During the Vedic period, he had a low status and was called
"Rudra". Later, during the Hindu period, he formed a triumvirate with
Brahma and Vishnu, and became one of the three main gods.
Old Donkey: Speaking of
Shiva's roots, it should be pre-Vedic. His form evolved from the fusion of
various ancient non-Vedic and Vedic gods, including the evolution of the god
Rudra. But in the Vedas period, he did not appear with this name of
"Shiva", but was called "Rudra". Shiva's name in Buddhism
is "Rudra", and he was called "Shiva" in later Hindu
beliefs.
Shiva is the god of
destruction and also plays the role of creation. He is the most revered god by
the Indian people. He is regarded as the highest god by Shiva followers. He has
eight incarnations: earth, water, fire, wind, sky, sun, moon, and sacrifice. In
addition to destruction, he can also create. For the world, there is no
creation without destruction. Buddhist literature calls him the Great
Self-Heaven, who lives at the top of the Form Realm and is the Lord of the
Three Thousand Realms.
The old man continued:
Shiva is both terrifying and
benevolent in many ways.
On the benevolent side, he
is portrayed as an omniscient first yogi, the patron saint of yoga, meditation
and the arts. Shiva is also known as the God of Rhythm and Dance. for he loves
to dance in times of joy and sorrow. When Shiva is alone, his greatest pleasure
is dancing. When he dances, he can forget his spiritual unrest and gain
spiritual joy while dancing. Therefore, he dances when he is happy; he is sad
and angry. Sometimes, I can also dance. Shiva's practice is yoga and dance.
The dance symbolizes both
the glory of Shiva and the eternal rotation of the universe, which rotates to
immortalize the universe. When Shiva dances he represents the truth of the
universe: he is surrounded by a halo and accompanied by swarms of jinn. Anyone
lucky enough to behold this sight gazed at him, and even the devil was moved by
it, and the unclean and evil souls were absorbed into his spiritual power.
At the end of an era, Shiva
dances the Tandava dance to complete the destruction of the world and merge it
into the world spirit.
The old donkey danced a yoga
dance and sang the "Dance of Tandava" hymn:
Let's dance yoga together,
Let us sing the song of Tandava,
Follow the dance steps of Lord Shiva.
Human life is both high-spirited and decadent,
After the gorgeous ending, we can start again,
The beginning of a new dance.
Taking the legendary wise Agu Demba as the protagonist, I started to create the Chinese-English version of "Snow Land Fable" using the traditional fable creation method that combines poetry and prose. Writing fables makes me feel like a child again. Studying snowy culture is my prescription to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
