The marriage and love
between
Chang'e and Hou Yi
Adhuo asked
Agudengba:
Toads are
originally toads and are ugly in appearance. Folks should look down on this
toad. "A toad wants to eat swan meat" is a famous Chinese proverb!
How could this toad climb to the moon and become a mythical beast in the moon
like the Jade Rabbit?
"You should
have heard the story of Chang'e flying to the moon, right?" Agudenba said.
Agudemba
continued:
Chang'e, known
as Chang'e in ancient times, was renamed to avoid the taboo of Liu Heng,
Emperor Wen of Han Dynasty. "Gui Zang" is a divination book from the
Shang Dynasty. This book has been lost. However, with the unearthing of Qin
bamboo slips in Wangjiatai, Hubei Province, relevant scholars have inferred
that the easily accounted part is "Gui Zang", which contains records
related to Chang'e's flight to the moon.
"Chang'e
should regret stealing the elixir, and the blue sea and blue sky are in my
heart every night." These are two lines from the poem "Chang'e"
by Li Shangyin, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The story of Chang'e flying to the
moon has been spread throughout ancient China. But to tell the story of Chang'e
flying to the moon, we must first start with the marriage and love between
Chang'e and Hou Yi.
According to
legend, Chang'e is the niece of the Emperor of Heaven. She was beautiful, and
the Emperor liked her very much. He would give her whatever she wanted. She
lived a prosperous life in the heavenly palace.
Hou Yi was a
general under the Emperor of Heaven. He was good at martial arts and had very
good archery skills. He could hit the target with hundred shots from a hundred
steps away.
At that time,
the heavenly wolf was harming the heaven. The emperor was very afraid and sent
several generals to go there, but they couldn't put it down. The heavenly
soldiers and generals were all frightened and did not dare to go out. Hou Yi
volunteered to shoot the wolf. He carried a long sword on his back, hung a
quiver of arrows on his waist, and held a red bow. He drove a steam cart and
galloped forward. He fought with Sirius for several days and nights, and
finally shot him to death with one arrow. From then on, there was peace in
heaven. The Emperor of Heaven appointed Hou Yi as the Protector General and
took charge of the protective army.
When Chang'e saw
that Hou Yi had the trust of the Emperor of Heaven and that he was powerful and
handsome, she made up her mind to marry him.
Chang'e knew
that to make this marriage happen, the Emperor of Heaven had to make the
decision. She asked the waiter to get a thousand pearls from the Milky Way, and
then set the pearls in a crown. She took the crown as a gift to the Emperor of
Heaven and asked the Emperor to consummate her marriage to Hou Yi.
The Emperor of
Heaven knew that Chang'e was in love with Hou Yi, and he didn't want to meddle
in these nosy matters, but he couldn't bear Chang'e's repeated requests and accepted
such a precious gift from her, so he couldn't refuse. He also thought that
Chang'e was his own niece, and she was married to Hou Yi. After getting
married, with an extra layer of kinship, Hou Yi would become even more caring
to him. Thinking of this, he said to Chang'e, "Let me figure this out
slowly."
After some time,
the Emperor of Heaven transferred Luo Shen out of the Heavenly Palace for some
reason and asked her to manage Luoshui. She was not allowed to return to
Heaven.
A few days
later, the Emperor of Heaven ordered a banquet and invited Hou Yi to come and
drink. He secretly asked people to put a kind of medicine called Wangqingcao in
the wine Hou Yi drank. After Hou Yi drank this wine, he forgot all about his
previous love with Luo Shen. When Hou Yi was slightly drunk after eating wine,
the Emperor of Heaven ordered Chang'e to come out and toast Hou Yi. Chang'e can
be regarded as a beauty in the Heavenly Palace, and the dazzling appearance and
attire add to her beauty. The Emperor of Heaven pointed at Chang'e and said to
Hou Yi: "This is my niece. People say she is beautiful and very skillful
in her craftsmanship. She made my crown with her own hands. I want to marry her
to you, but I don't know what the general wants." how?"
Hou Yi drank the
Wangqing Wine and was drunk again. He looked at Chang'e and nodded blankly to
the Emperor of Heaven.
In this way,
Chang'e became Hou Yi's wife.
Once, the
Emperor of Heaven received a report from Emperor Yao in the lower realm, saying
that there were many evil beasts causing harm in the world. Among these evil
beasts are 猰貐, Chiseltooth, Jiuying, Gale, Fengzhu, etc., which are very
powerful. The shape of the beast is very scary. It has a dragon head, four
claws like a tiger, and roars like a wild leopard. I don’t know how many people
this beast has eaten. The chisel tooth is also a monster. It has the head of a
beast, a poisonous snake The body has teeth like sharp saw teeth. Jiuying is a
nine-headed water monster. When it attacks, the four heads on the left can spit
fire, and the four heads on the right can spray water. Fires can burn crops to
death, and floods can sink villages. These evil beasts are causing harm
everywhere at the same time, making it impossible for people to produce and
live.
After receiving
the report from Emperor Yao of the lower realm, the Heavenly Emperor of the
Upper Realm sent heavenly soldiers and generals to the human world to eliminate
the evil. Several groups were sent, but they were all devoured by evil beasts.
The Emperor of Heaven was very afraid and asked Hou Yi to protect him and the
Heavenly Court.
Hou Yi said:
"If the evil beasts are not removed, there will be no peace in the world,
and it will be difficult for the heaven to be safe." Hou Yi took the
initiative to request that these harmful beasts be removed. The emperor was
afraid that the evil beasts would endanger the heaven, so he agreed to Hou Yi's
request.
Hou Yi came to
the world with a red bow on his back and a quiver of arrows. With his divine
arrows, he shot Chisel Teeth in the wilderness of Chouhua, eliminated Jiu Ying
on the fierce water, and killed the strong wind horse in Qingqiu River. He
followed the 茰貐's footsteps, fought north and south, and finally shot it to death.
Captured the pig in the mulberry forest, and got rid of the poisonous snake by
the Dongting.
Hou Yi
eliminated great harm to the people, and the people were grateful for his
merits. The Emperor of Heaven granted Hou Yi an official position.
Hou Yi was
respected and loved by the people, and was consecrated by the Emperor of
Heaven. Chang'e was naturally happy. But she still felt very dissatisfied
because Hou Yi often went out to do things for everyone and rarely accompanied
her in the palace.
Agudengba sang a
song "Toad Palace Lovesickness":
Chang'e lived alone in the Toad Palace,
Thinking of Hou Yi,
Suffering from lovesickness.
Feeling dizzy,
Trembling all over,
Feeling uneasy.
Missing my husband leaves the lingering fragrance
empty,
Looking forward to seeing each other again, old
dreams never come true.
Stealing people's favor,
Stealing medicine and abandoning husband.
There is no use regretting
Confused and confused.
Taking the legendary wise Agu Demba as the protagonist, I started to create the Chinese-English version of "Snow Land Fable" using the traditional fable creation method that combines poetry and prose. Writing fableskes me feel like a child again. Studying snowy culture is my prescription to prevent Alzheimer’s di masease.
