How much do you know about
Spring Festival taboos?
There are many
Chinese folk customs and taboos during the Spring Festival. How much do you
know?
The essence of
taboos is to choose good luck and avoid bad luck, that is, to prohibit contact
between "holy" and "unclean" objects. In fact, this is also
a manifestation of psychological auspiciousness and happiness.
Legend has it
that the three corpse gods are always at odds with the people and create all
kinds of trouble during the Spring Festival. During the Spring Festival,
according to Chinese folklore, people, gods, and ghosts all gather together.
Therefore, there are many taboos on the interactions between people, people and
ghosts, and people and gods. If you are not careful, you will be punished.
There are different opinions on various taboos.
The first day of
the first lunar month is the beginning of the new year, and this day has the
most taboos.
On this day, it
is forbidden to use knives, scissors, axes and other utensils, and it is
forbidden to carry water, work in the fields, borrow fire, collect debts, shop,
do needlework, kill animals, and cry;
On this day, it
is taboo to say bad words and unlucky words, such as: damage, destruction,
death, light, ghost, steal, lose, poverty, end, end, back time, illness,
faint...
On this day, it
is taboo to sweep the floor, take out garbage, or splash sewage, otherwise
wealth and luck will be swept away and thrown away.
It is said that
the first day of the first lunar month is the broom's birthday. You cannot use
a broom on this day, otherwise it will sweep away luck, lose money, and attract
the "broom star", which will bring bad luck. If you must sweep the
floor, you must sweep from the outside to the inside.
It is also not
allowed to pour water or take out garbage outside on this day, for fear of
losing money. Many places still retain this custom of cleaning up on New Year's
Eve. On New Year's Day, no brooms are taken out, no garbage is taken out, and a
large bucket is prepared to hold waste water, and no spilling is allowed on
that day.
On this day, it
is forbidden to cook raw food. Staple food should be cooked before the Lunar
New Year. Only twice-cooked food can be eaten during the Chinese New Year.
Cooking is good, and raw is bad. It is most taboo to wash rice with soup.
On this day, it
is forbidden to eat without fish after midnight on New Year's Eve and on the
morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, and it is forbidden to eat
without chicken during the New Year's Eve dinner. When there are fish and
chicken, avoid eating them all. This is called having more than enough (fish)
every year,
Good luck
(rooster). When eating food with bones, avoid saying "bones" and say
"Caixi Tuo" instead.
This day is the
day when gods, ghosts, and ghosts from the upper realm come down to the lower
realm. Therefore, sacrifices are made to ghosts and gods. Therefore, it is
taboo to talk about ghosts, death, and killing...
During the
Chinese New Year in the old days, women encountered more taboos:
From the first
to the fifth day of the lunar month, it is forbidden for women to visit homes,
visit relatives, or visit friends. It is commonly known that women should not
go out in the first month, otherwise it is considered unlucky;
Married women
are not allowed to celebrate the New Year at their parents’ home from their
thirties to the first day of the Lunar New Year;
Single widows
are not allowed to stay in their natal home, otherwise their families will
consider it unlucky;
Married women
are called Guining when they return to their parents' home on the second day of
the first lunar month, but they must stay at their husband's house at night.
This is called not having an empty house in the first lunar month. The ban can
only be lifted until the second day of the second lunar month, otherwise it
will be against the husband's family.
During the
Spring Festival, there are many taboos when paying New Year greetings:
Those who keep
filial piety should not go out to pay New Year greetings.
It is taboo to
worship in front of the bed of a bedridden person, otherwise it will be very
unlucky for the person being worshiped.
When paying New
Year greetings, one should first pay homage to the ancestors and then to the
owner of the house.
During the
Spring Festival, if an obituary notice comes to the home of a relative or
friend, you must first tear a corner of the obituary notice to show bad luck.
Death is most
taboo on the first day of the first lunar month. If someone dies of illness, it
must be claimed that it was the second day of the lunar month.
It is considered
very unlucky to encounter a funeral on the road when you go out for the first
time in the new year.
During the
Spring Festival, it is taboo to do dishes, swear, and defecate in public...
In short, as the
saying goes: when entering the country, ask about the taboos, when entering the
country, ask about the customs, and when entering the country, ask about the
taboos.
There are
differences in the Spring Festival in different parts of China due to different
ethnic groups and regions, but they are similar but have differences. Most of
the taboos include the above words and actions.
Whether it is
forbidden or taboo depends on the person, the time, the place, and the belief.
