Atisha and Chungdumba
The old man Lavani
said to Agudengba: "Smart Mr. Agudengba, I will tell you a story about the
master-disciple of Atisha and Zhongdunpa. Their master-disciple relationship is
like that of father and son."
Old Lavani said:
Venerable Atisha
lived from 982 to 1054 AD. He was born in Bangladesh. He was a second prince
named "Yue Zang". Relying on the great achievers of that time, he
became a monk in the Dharma Dharma Department, and was named "The Virtuous
Lantern Wisdom" and became the most respected person in Buddhism.
In order to
respect him, people in the world call him "Jowo Beden Atisha", which
means "the most virtuous and distinguished one".
Later, the King of
Tibet welcomed him into Tibet to safeguard the holy religion and establish the
right views on Karma, the Three Jewels, etc., so Tibetans respectfully called
him Karma Lama, Three Jewels Good Knowledge, and Three Jewels Lama. Lama means
good teacher. .
Venerable Atisha
founded the Kadam Sect in Tibet and wrote "The Book of Bodhi Path"
and so on.
The most important
disciple of Venerable Atisha is Venerable Zhongdunpa, who is also his heart
son.
Venerable
Zhongdunpa was originally a layman. When he was a good teacher, he was
responsible for all chores such as grinding flour, herding cattle, and herding
horses. However, at the same time, he did not relax in listening, thinking, and
studying the classics. There was never a trace of disrespect or disbelief
towards his good friends. After becoming proficient in many sutras and esoteric
texts, he also studied Buddhist scriptures and Sanskrit.
Later, Venerable
Zhongdunpa heard from passers-by that Venerable Atisha had come to Tibet. He
was moved involuntarily and had incredible faith. He was very, very eager to
see Venerable Atisha. .
Venerable Atisha
also received a prophecy from Tara; Green Tara was his deity and could often be
seen. Tara told Venerable Atisha: "Three days from now, a great layman
will come to you during the day on the fourth day. You should bless him."
Venerable Atisha,
just like what Tara said, has been thinking about this matter in his heart, and
said to the people around him: "Counting three days from now, on the
fourth day during the day, there will be a man wearing a long head. The
top-hatted Upasaka—a householder who was my disciple in a previous life—will
come here.”
After Venerable
Atisha finished speaking, he prepared a purification bottle next to his pillow
and waited for Venerable Zhongdunpa day by day. This feeling is very similar to
the feeling of a parent missing his son who is about to return. He counts his
fingers day by day and says: "On the fourth day of the day...what else
should be prepared for him?"
When three days
had passed, Venerable Atisha went around and said, "Oh, has this layman
come? Why hasn't he come yet?"
By noon, we had
not seen him yet. It seemed that Venerable Atisha was thinking about him very
much and thought: "Supreme Tara will not tell me a lie. He will definitely
come."
Then the Venerable
went to the countryside to give lectures. He might have been thinking about
this incident during the lecture.
In fact, when
Venerable Atisha was on his way back from his sermon, Zhongdunpa, his
attendants and others came to that place. Some attendants thought that they
should stay and make other preparations when they arrived here, but Venerable
Zhongdunpa said: "I came here just to see the Mahayana master. I will meet
him a moment earlier or later. Of the two, I will definitely choose to meet him
a moment earlier." .”
So Zhongdunpa
immediately continued his journey and rushed to the residence of Venerable
Atisha.
On the way,
Zhongdunpa met the Venerable Atisha, and then immediately paid homage to the
Venerable and offered gold and other gifts.
Venerable Atisha
put his hand on Venerable Zhongdunpa's head, read the "Auspicious
Ode" to him, and gave him blessings and blessings.
Old Lavani said to
Agudengba: What is the use of eulogies? Reciting it once before doing anything
will help you succeed as you wish, so remember it.
Get up in the
morning and recite this day, all your wishes will come true
Chanting during
war is the best way to win.
Chanting before
sleeping can help you see good dreams
Reciting it
beforehand will fulfill all your wishes
Always recite
longevity, virtue, fame and fortune
Purifying
obstacles and increasing rebirth determine victory
Wonderful
goodness, perfect fulfillment, everything you want comes true
The realization of
all righteousness surpasses what the Buddha preached
After the meal,
Venerable Tsung Dunpa also came to the room where Venerable Atisha lived.
Venerable Atisha placed the purification bottle on Venerable Tsung Dunpa's head
and gave him an initiation.
At that time,
Venerable Zhongdunpa asked Venerable Atisha three things:
The first one is:
"What kind of pandits and great teachers are there in India?"
The second
question is: "Are the teachings I have learned in the past all in line
with the Tao?"
The third one is:
"Should I stay right in front of you, Master?"
It sounds so pure
and innocent.
Venerable Atisha
replied:
"There are
many skillful and proficient pandits in India. At this stage when I came to
Tibet, in the place of Capricorn, there is still a siddha appearing every
day." This is the answer to the first question.
The second
question was answered: "The teachings you learned in the past were
scattered and you have not entered the Tao."
In response to the
third question, Venerable Atisha said: "You can live here now!"
Venerable Atisha
even told him: "My deity Tara has given a prophecy, and my inheritance
will bless you!"
Look at the
complete honesty between master and disciple. Are you surprised that they
didn't observe each other for a long time? There are examples of this in
Ancestors. But there are also people who have been observing for a long time.
He observed him for twelve years, and he observed him for another twelve years,
and his life passed like this.
After Venerable
Atisha said these words of blessing, Venerable Zhongdunpa immediately boiled a
piece of butter sent by the donor of the fast that day, made an oil lamp that
could be lit all night, and offered it to Venerable Atisha. pillow.
From then on,
Venerable Tsung Dunpa never stopped offering a lamp to Venerable Atisha every
day. This is the famous koan of Venerable Tsung Dunpa offering the lamp of the
good teacher. Even after Venerable Atisha passed away, he continued to place
such a lamp in front of the Venerable's bone stupa that could be used at night.
Therefore, the friendship between their master and disciple was very deep!
The old man Lavani
smiled and said to Agudengpa: When we read the biographies of the ancestors,
Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, or listen to the good teachers and tell their
stories, I actually found that the emotions of many good teachers from the
inheritance are very deep. I have truly seen the mood of Atisha and other
Tonpas just now.
I have two good
friends, one in his 70s and the other in his 60s. They were waiting for the
Dharma like that and said, "Where are you driving now?" "Then he
said, "Where is he?" After half an hour, he said, "Where is he
again?" "Just waiting like this. In fact, they were always together,
but it snowed that day, so the disciple came back a little late, and then the
master kept mumbling: "Oh! Not here yet? "Just looking forward to it
like that is really like parents looking forward to the return of their son. So
using "father and son" to compare teachers and students is really
apt. This is "Sheng Juewo, father and son."
Old Lavani smiled
and asked Agudemba: "Smart Mr. Agudemba, after listening to this story,
what will you think about God and the Clark and Mark brothers?"
The old man Lavani
sang a song "Ode to the Auspicious Eight Saints" in Tibetan:

Taking the legendary wise Agu Demba as the protagonist, I started to create the Chinese-English version of "Snow Land Fable" using the traditional fable creation method that combines poetry and prose. Writing fables makes me feel like a child again. Studying snowy culture is my prescription to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
