Florence was long under the control of the Medici family. In the 15th century, Florence boasted significant industry and approximately 80 banks with headquarters and branches, its total revenue exceeding that of England. In 1494, influenced by the radical Dominican priest Savonarola, the Medici family was expelled, ending the first period of Medici rule and restoring Florence to a republican system. In 1530, the Medici family regained power with the support of the emperor and the pope. In 1537, they received the title of Duke of Florence, and in 1569, they received the title of Grand Duke of Tuscany from the pope, ruling for two centuries.
