In the 16th century, Florence was at the heart of the Italian Renaissance. Although it was a republic only in name and form, it produced a rich body of literature expounding the virtues of republican freedom, wielding immense influence and thus being called the cradle of the Renaissance. After 1400, the near-conquest of the city by the Visconti family of Milan sparked a strong patriotic reaction in Florence. Florentine intellectuals viewed their city as the inheritor of the ancient Roman republican tradition and a defender of freedom against Milanese tyranny.
