Crow and
turtle
Betty, a chattering
crow, flapped her wings and told Agudenba and the coachman Azhuo some stories
about the tortoise woman, and then started telling a story about a turtle.
crow betty says:
One day, I was
resting on the branch of a big tree, imagining the accidents that might happen
in my life.
At this time, a
turtle under the tree suddenly looked up at me. The turtle said to me:
When there is no
peace in this world, every step you take may be in danger. First, all kinds of
disasters may happen, such as earthquakes, landslides, floods, and hurricanes.
It’s really scary! Second, you have to worry about going hungry at any time,
because the stored food and water will be used one day. It’s over! Third,
thieves, robbers, gangsters, politicians, and even more terrifying corrupt
officials will reach out to you all the time...
Crow Betty
continued:
As the turtle was
talking, he suddenly remembered something important and crawled away slowly
without saying hello to me.
I never expected
that what the turtle said would be heard by the three partners in the big
forest - the crested chicken, the earthworm and the monkey. These words
frightened them half to death.
The crested chicken
gets scared when thinking about earthquakes and hurricanes. He trembled and
said: "What if I fall asleep and the sky collapses? It's easy to handle if
it collapses during the day, and I can fly away; but if I fall asleep at night,
won't I be crushed to death?" ?”
Earthworms are
particularly afraid of starving to death. He said: "What if I eat up the
nutrients in the soil? I will have to starve to death, starve to death..."
The monkey was
thinking of thieves and robbers. He said with tears: "I love the earth the
most in the world, but I have to leave it at night and climb into a tree to
sleep. What if thieves and robbers steal the earth while I'm asleep?!"
Crow Betty smiled
and babbled to Agudemba and coachman Adhuo again:
From then on, the
crested chicken slept on its back on the ground with its paws in the air every
day. He thought that if the sky fell one day, he could resist it for a while
with these two claws.
Earthworms excrete
as much as they eat every day. They are afraid that they will use up the
nutrients in the soil.
What about the
monkey? He comes down from the tree three times every night to see if the earth
has been stolen by thieves and robbers.
Crow Betty said: I
saw stupid crested chickens, earthworms and monkeys falling into panic because
of what the turtle said. They are really ignorant and pitiful. I want to help
them get out of their confusion and find their own lives again. I'll tell them:
Humans regard the
tortoise as the Northern Xuanwu among the four mythical beasts, and the Emperor
of the Tang Dynasty also named the tortoise the Zhenwu Emperor. The turtle has
a long lifespan and is a very spiritual animal, so the turtle shell left behind
after its death is regarded by humans as a spiritual creature. The structure of
the turtle skeleton is very unique. There are tortoise patterns on the back of
the turtle. There are three grids in the middle, which represent the three
talents of heaven, earth and man. There are ten grids around it, which
represent the heavenly stems. Some turtle shells also have twenty-four grids,
which represent the twenty-four. Solar terms; there are twelve grids on the
bottom of the turtle shell, representing the twelve earthly branches. Because
of this characteristic, it is perfect to use the turtle shell as a divination
tool. Put the tortoise shell on the fire and roast it, and you can know the
appearance of all things in the sky. If you want to relieve your worries, find
a tortoise and throw it into the fire. You can predict the future direction
from its exploding tortoise patterns.
The crested chicken
discovered the turtle's direction from the air, the earthworm found the grass
where the turtle was hiding, and the monkey caught the turtle.
The crested chicken,
the earthworm and the monkey gave the caught turtle to Betty the crow.
Crow Betty threw the
caught turtle into the prepared fire, and the turtle was burned alive. Many
turtle patterns burst out of the turtle shell.
Crow Betty smiled
and said, I explained this turtle pattern to the crested chicken, earthworms
and monkeys: Anyone who talks nonsense will die and be burned to death in the
lies he fabricated. Ignorant people who believe lies will always be worse than
dead. Therefore, don’t believe lies and live every day well in order to find
your own happiness.
Crow Betty sang a
song "Don't Believe in Bastards":
Some people regard turtles as
mythical animals.
Enshrined in temples as sacred
objects.
Someone wrote the tortoise pattern
as a heavenly book,
Can predict good and bad luck.
I regard the turtle as a bastard,
The turtles and grandchildren all
tell lies.
Why are lies passed down from
generation to generation?
Just because the king is a big
bastard.
Taking the legendary wise Agu Demba as the protagonist, I started to create the Chinese-English version of "Snow Land Fable" using the traditional fable creation method that combines poetry and prose. Writing fableskes me feel like a child again. Studying snowy culture is my prescription to prevent Alzheimer’s di masease.
