Cow's fate
When most people
in the world are awakening, human nature will show its kind side. Humanity has
banned cruel bullfighting performances, and the once glorious bullfighting
sport has been banned. Tranquil scenes can be seen everywhere in the fields,
and cows have become the protagonist of the beautiful scenery.
The ancestors of
more than 800 existing domestic cattle species have a long history, and most
scientists believe that they are descendants of aurochs. The aurochs is a
ferocious creature with sharp horns that was distributed in Europe, Asia and
North America more than 2 million years ago. The wild cow is about 2 meters
tall and weighs about 1000kg. This creature survived the last Ice Age, but due
to human hunting, its population continued to decline until the last aurochs died
in 1627, declaring the species extinct.
When bison lived
on this planet, humans would continue to hunt them, use violence to subjugate
the bison, and turn them into enslaved working cattle. If their wild nature
persists, these bison will be put to death in the bullring. But humans and cows
seem to have the friendliest relationship, and that is the cows raised by
humans, which allow people to see the brighter side of human nature. No one
will force cows to plow or carry loads, and no male cow will die in a bullring.
Mr. Feeley, who
specializes in the business of selling bullfights and animals, cannot do the
business of selling bullfights because the sport of bullfighting is banned, and
the bison have fled the nearby mountains and forests en masse. Mr. Feili found
Shan Weng and Fu Niang because Shan Weng Animal Breeding Farm had newly
expanded a dairy farm and raised many cows. Whenever guests come to visit, Shan
Weng's wife Fu Niang will serve them with fresh milk. Mr. Feeley wanted to
start a business selling milk and young bulls.
The mountain man
told Mr. Feeley:
A total of about 1
billion dairy cows are bred globally to produce milk and beef. Because humans
drink milk every day, children drink baby milk, and adults drink adult milk
powder. Like meat, the milk humans drink now comes from low-welfare factory
farming, not from traditional zoonotic animal husbandry.
But there is a
question that has been bothering Mr. Feeley: Why does the cow keep producing
milk? Is it made of special materials? It produces milk even when it is not
lactating? In fact, many people don't know this question. A cow produces milk
because she has given birth to a calf. But there is no female individual of any
mammal that will leak milk from her breasts every day for no reason.
The answer given
by Shan Weng’s wife Fu Niang shocked Mr. Philly:
The cows on the
dairy assembly line have never been in love, never had sex, or even seen a bull
in their lives, but they have been giving birth to calves and being milked all
their lives. In fact, the mother cow has never breastfed her baby, because if
the calf eats her mother's milk, the mother and the baby will develop a
mother-child attachment, and she will not let anyone milk her. Cows are
separated from their mothers at birth. Some of the heifers were fed into dairy
cows, repeating the fate of their mothers; some of the young bulls were sold
and raised as beef cattle, which was considered lucky; and some of the young
bulls went directly into biochemical factories and were turned into various serums.
, proteins and enzymes! It turns out that female cows continue to produce milk
and calves only after they are artificially inseminated.
Fu Niang also told
Mr. Feili: Under modern advanced management, the life of a cow is probably like
this. When a heifer reaches puberty at 16 months of age, it is time to consider
inseminating her. Soon, the one-year-old virgin cow became pregnant. After 280
days, the heifer gave birth and became a mother. From this point on, the
automated mechanical milk extraction unit began sucking her milk regularly.
After another 305 days, the cows stopped producing milk and could rest. But you
can only rest for 60 days. Because 220 days ago, she had been artificially
inseminated for the second time. Sixty days later, she would give birth to her
second child, starting a new cycle. After seven or eight reincarnations, the
cow's physical strength is exhausted and it is "eliminated".
“Pulling out” is dairy industry terminology.
Fu Niang explained to Mr. Feili: I just don’t want it anymore, just dispose of
it. If you can sell it, sell it. If you can't sell it, don't keep it to waste
feed.
Soon, the deal
between Mr. Philly and Fu Niang was successful. The cows that were
"culled" due to physical exhaustion, as well as the young bulls,
became their trading items.
Mr. Feeley is very
excited that he can sell these low-priced cows to the beef market and get a lot
of profit.
When humans enter
a highly industrialized and technological society, it is also when disaster
approaches in the world of cows. Humans can cruelly cut off the sexual life of
a female cow, but allow her to produce milk and give birth to babies endlessly
after artificial insemination. When the female cows fail, they are sent to the
slaughterhouse along with their calves.
In some human
cultures, cows are sacred symbols, often reflected in art, mythology, and
nursery rhymes. Humans seem to be singing carols for cows.
"A glass of
milk can strengthen a nation." Humanity's exaggerated publicity of the
functions of milk has promoted the development of the dairy industry and
allowed more cows to "eat grass and squeeze out milk."
When we drink milk
happily, who would think about the tragic fate of cows?
At this time, the
melancholy singing of the cowherd came from the distance:
The heaven and earth are in chaos,
Spend your time peacefully throughout your life.
There are many flaws in the history of the world,
How can fantasy avoid impermanence?
Only in spring do we see the green willows,
The autumn wind sees yellow chrysanthemums again.
The bull dies in the bullring,
Cows find it difficult to feed their babies.
The human heart is hateful and shameless,
Animal nature is distorted.
Human nature is inferior to birds and beasts,
I don’t know when to have a kind heart.
Taking the legendary wise Agu Demba as the protagonist, I started to create the Chinese-English version of "Snow Land Fable" using the traditional fable creation method that combines poetry and prose. Writing fables makes me feel like a child again. Studying snowy culture is my prescription to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
