Resham Firiri:

Buddha's hometown

Buddha's hometown

Guided by crow Betty, Agudemba rode a donkey to Lumbini in Nepal.

A Nepalese old man received Agudengba very warmly and fed Agudengba's donkey fodder.

The old man in Nepal is of yellow race, and the language he speaks is Newari, which belongs to the Tibeto-Burman language family. The old man told Agudumba that his name was Lavani.

Old Lavani is very hospitable, friendly and enthusiastic, he has a warm smile for everyone.

Old Lavani opened a small restaurant in Lumbini. When introducing his restaurant to Agudumba, he said: Most of the population in Nepal has strong religious beliefs, so it can be considered a safe place. Violence can be seen all over the world, and it is also seen sometimes in Nepal. However, Nepal has no record of any aggressive fighting resulting in human death or property damage. Nepal is a peaceful and safe travel destination. Nepalese people continue to live in happiness and harmony even though the country's economy is facing many crises. He smiled and said that the glowing faces of the people were the best reflection.

Old Lavani prepared rice for Agudengba. Some of the hand rice here is made of lentil paste, and there are also some curry vegetables as ingredients. It is one of Nepal's unique delicacies.

The special delicacy here in Nepal is spring rolls, and the spring rolls here are very different from Chinese spring rolls. Domestic spring rolls are generally long, and they are filled with some vegetarian vegetables and some pork, while local spring rolls are filled with Some fried vegetables and noodles are fried in a pan. Of course, its appearance is different from that in China, and the difference is quite big.

The old man Lavani said: Nepalese people don’t eat beef because cattle are sacred; they don’t eat pork because pigs are too dirty. So the spring rolls here do not wrap pork or beef.

The old man Lavani added: The dumplings here are also different from Chinese dumplings. They have different shapes and different ways of making. They have a Niva flavor. The dumplings here are sewn on the plate with leaves and then dipped in them. Some curries, mixed with potatoes and side dishes, were very delicious.

The old man Lavani said most proudly: Lumbini is the birthplace of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism. "Lumbini" means "lovely" in Sanskrit. Lumbini is the "hometown of Buddha", located at the junction of southwest Nepal and India, in Rupandhi County, 360 kilometers away from Kathmandu.

Agudengba asked the old man Lavani: Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha Sakyamuni. It should be said that Nepal is his hometown. Why do Indians claim that Buddhism originated in India and is even recognized by some Western countries?

Old Lavani said: Since the 6th century BC, some countries have appeared in Nepal. The Kirat Dynasty was the first dynasty in the history of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. It ruled the Kathmandu Valley for about nine hundred years, but this dynasty eventually It was overthrown by some people in Uttar Pradesh, India. In other words, the power of the Kirat Dynasty was limited to the Kathmandu Valley, let alone the area where Buddhism first spread in the Ganges River Basin in northern and central India. In other words, Buddhism Place of origin, so there is nothing wrong with saying that Buddhism originated in northern India in ancient times. It can also be said that Buddha was born in Nepal, but Buddhism originated in northern India. In fact, ancient India should be called the South Asian subcontinent.

Old Lavani added: Li Bai was born in Kyrgyzstan, and has always been considered a Chinese poet. Because Kyrgyzstan, where Li Bai was born, belonged to the Tang Dynasty of China, and Li Bai wrote Tang poetry after coming to mainland China, there is nothing wrong with calling Li Bai a poet of the Tang Dynasty. Now, although Li Bai's birthplace no longer belongs to China, it should be understood that when Li Bai was born, the concept of Kyrgyzstan did not exist. Therefore, there is still nothing wrong with calling Li Bai a Chinese poet. The birthplace of Buddha and the origin of Buddhism are two different concepts.

The old man Lavani impromptu sang the Buddhist song "Lumbini":

Go to Lumbini for spiritual practice

Bow before the Lord Buddha

Enlightenment of True Zen under the Bodhi Tree

The world of Saha is vast and boundless

Flowers bloom and fall without melancholy

Yunjuanyunshu not confused

Interpreting sadness inside and outside dreams

Opening the Heavenly Eyes on the Way of Cultivation

Seeing through the coldness and warmth of human feelings

Pudu Cihang has faith

May all living beings be happy and I may be healthy

Dharma boat with a destination in mind

Crow Betty said to Agudengba: People who believe in Buddhism know that Sakyamuni is the Buddha. Buddha was born in the border area of present-day Nepal and India. But did Buddhism originate in present-day Nepal or India? This makes Nepalese people very entangled, and behind it lies a very complex historical and geographical issue.

Betty the crow opened her big mouth and chattered to Agudumba about the origin of Buddhism.

Crow Betty said: The founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni, was born in Lumbini in present-day Nepal. He was a prince of the Sakyamuni tribe. There are two key words here: Lumbini and Sakya tribe.

Lumbini is also translated as Lumbini, Lavani, Linweini, etc. It means "lovely" in Sanskrit.

There is no dispute that Lumbini is the "hometown of Lord Buddha". Lumbini is located at the junction of southwest Nepal and India, in Rupandhi County, 360 kilometers away from Kathmandu.

Agudengba said: The Sakya people should be a part of the Sai people mentioned in ancient Chinese historical records. They are called "Sai" or "Sai species" in China's "Historical Records" and "Han Shu·Biography of the Western Regions". In the ancient Chinese myth and legend of the Queen Mother of the West, they are the people of the tribe of the Queen Mother of the West.

Crow Betty said: I don't agree with this view, because the Scythians are divided into three parts, and have different cultural customs and characteristics. Combined with the conceptual analysis of geography, the "Sai" or "Sai" mentioned in Chinese historical records "Sai Zhong" and they are not the same person or the same thing at all.

Agudumba was not controversial, Crow Betty continued:

The Sakya tribe appeared in the Indian Peninsula around 1,000 BC. Since they entered later than the Aryans, they lived in remote areas at that time such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Nepal in present-day India. The Aryans entered the South Asian subcontinent around 2000 BC. The South Asian subcontinent was ancient India, which is a different concept from modern India. Because the Sakya tribe arrived later than the Aryans, the Sakya tribe is located outside the Brahmin cultural circle, and the place where they live is considered by the Aryans to be uncivilized areas.

Crow Betty said:

Remoteness is a fact, but "uncivilized" does not mean forever. In the experience of Sakyamuni, it is not difficult to see the exchange and integration of races and cultures in the so-called "remote areas" at the time of Sakyamuni. Sakyamuni's father is King Suddhodana. He is the king of Kapilavastu in ancient India. His surname is Gautama and his name is Southudana, which means pure rice, so he is called King Suddhodana. He belongs to the Sakyamuni clan. . His mother is Lady Maya, the daughter of the king of the neighboring Koli Tribe. The Koli tribe is a settlement in the eastern part of ancient India. It belongs to the Kingdom of Ramaka and is the main citizen of this small country. Together with the Sakyamuni tribe, the entire tribe believes in the Buddha Sakyamuni. Although Moro is the name of a country, it was originally a clan name. But the Buddha belonged to the Kshatriya caste, which was one of the four castes in ancient India. It was abbreviated as Kshatriya, which means land owner. That is, the race of kings and ministers who rule the people and engage in military service, so they are also called the "king race".

Just like the "Sai" or "Sai species" are regarded as Scythians, along with the "civilization" of the Aryans, the Kshatriya ancestors are also regarded as Aryans from Central Asia. In the fact that Sakyamuni was a Sakya and a Kshatriya caste, it is not difficult to see the integration of Aryan culture into remote areas of ancient India. The Kshatriyas were quite powerful, and their class was second only to the Brahmins. They were the class to which the royal family, nobles, and nobles belonged, and were engaged in military and political affairs. According to Brahmin scriptures, the main responsibility of Kshatriya is to protect Brahmins from generation to generation. In modern India, people also use "Kshatriya" to refer to the professional, ruling and military classes. After experiencing the civilized integration of the Aryans, although the Sakya tribe has the Kshatriya caste, this does not mean that the ancestors of the Sakya tribe are Aryans from Central Asia.

In order to prove that what he said was correct, Crow Betty said to Agudemba: Mr. Agudemba, not far away is the ruins of the Palace of King Kapilavastu of Nepal. Are you willing to go and see it?

Agudemba happily agreed. Guided by the crow Betty, he rode his donkey Mahu toward the royal palace ruins.

Along the way, Crow Betty talked about the Buddha’s experience:

The Buddha received traditional Brahmin education when he was a child. When he was 29 years old, he felt the various sufferings of life, old age, illness and death. In addition, the Sakya clan was facing the threat of genocide in war. He was dissatisfied with the Brahmanism at that time, so he gave up Live a royal life, become a monk and practice Taoism.

At the beginning, the Buddha learned meditation from the pioneers of Samkhya Alarakaramo and Udaka Ramazi near the city of Sahara, King of Magadha, and then went to practice asceticism alone in the trees near the Nairana River for 6 years. Later, the Buddha believed that asceticism was not the way to achieve liberation, so he went to Bodh Gaya to sit under the Bipala tree and meditate on the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Causes and Conditions, and finally reached enlightenment.

Enlightenment established the basic teachings of primitive Buddhism, and Buddha then devoted great enthusiasm and energy to the creation of the "Sangha" system. "Sangha" is the sangha, the organizational form of Buddhist monks.

Crow Betty said: Afterwards, Buddhism spread in the Ganges River Basin in northern and central India, and Buddha formulated precepts, which formed the religious practice of believers and became a powerful guarantee for maintaining the organization and order of the sangha. After the death of Buddha, his disciples organized his teachings to prevent the loss of Buddhist teachings over time and to prevent other "heretic" doctrines from infiltrating Buddhism. This resulted in Buddhist classics, basic doctrines, and organizational forms. , and precepts have become necessary elements for the spread and development of religion, allowing Buddhism to flourish in the future and become one of the three major religions in the world along with Christianity and Islam.

In order to explain the teachings of Buddhism more simply, Crow Betty sang a Buddhist song "Awakening":

Buddha taught us

Do not think too much

waste time of life

pain does exist

You should learn to stay away

Buddhism in a nutshell

pain comes from desire

Peace without desire

Humans and sentient beings in the six realms

sinking into misery

Continuously reincarnating in life and death

Ignorance causes pain

Need to understand impermanence

Non-self can end suffering

Cut off all worries

You can escape from the three realms

strive to overcome ignorance

See the truth of life

Know the universe

Beyond birth, old age, illness and death

Practicing the Four Noble Truths Diligently

End the Six Paths of Reincarnation

Get ultimate liberation

Enter the realm of Nirvana

Purpose of practicing Buddhism

Not for self-achievement

Bring happiness to all living beings

is the truth of liberation

Buddha Sakyamuni

Lay the foundation of Buddhism

Zen practice and enlightenment

Everyone can become a Buddha

Buddha Gautama Buddha

Buddha Gautama Buddha

Anyone who believes in Buddhism knows that Gautama Buddha is the Buddha. The Buddha was born in the border area of present-day Nepal and India. He became a monk at the age of 29. He later accepted disciples and preached in North India, established a sangha and promoted Buddhism. Buddhism and Hinduism both developed in Indian culture, so of course they are not unrelated. For example, the six paths of reincarnation in Buddhism are derived from the concept of Brahmanism. When Hinduism was weak, it also absorbed many Buddhist concepts to strengthen itself.

Crow Betty said to Agudemba: From a certain perspective, Buddhism is a reaction to Hinduism. Many believers do not know that Gautama Buddha was against the Hindu god Vishnu. Never would I have imagined that Buddha is actually one of the most influential incarnations of Vishnu.

Crow Betty told Agudumba:

The Bhagavad Purana, which is widely circulated and well-known in India, records in detail the ten incarnations of Vishnu and the stories of his 24 descents. Among them, Gautama Siddhartha, the Buddha, is the ninth incarnation of Vishnu. Therefore, when the Buddha came to the world, Brahma, Sakyamuni and other gods led the gods to come to bathe the Buddha.

Vishnu is one of the three main gods of Hinduism, the orthodox and handsome main god. He is the savior in Hinduism, and Vaishnavism is also a salvation religion in a sense. Whenever the world is in crisis, Vishnu will come down to save the world. Each time he descends to earth, he creates an incarnation in a way similar to "reincarnation."

In terms of religious organizations, incarnation is also a way for the Vaishnavite sect to attract believers. Whenever there are heroes, great kings, religious leaders or even some kind of spiritual events in the mortal world, the Vaishnavism priests will jump out and start flipping through the books. Pointing to a piece of Sanskrit that no one could understand, he said: Let me just say, this great man is actually the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the Lord God, and he came specifically to save the world. The most powerful case is that recent Hindu mythology describes Buddha as the incarnation of Vishnu, and thus incorporates Buddhism.

Agudumba asked:

Why did Vishnu come to the world as Buddha? Since he is an omnipotent god who can destroy demons and monsters with a snap of his finger, why does he have to work so hard to come to the human world?

crow betty says:

The absorptive power of Hinduism is reflected in the Puranas, which created pantheons that brought together numerous deities that were originally the focus of independent worship. The inclusion of Buddha in the avatar of Vishnu is often cited as an example of the syncretic nature of Hinduism. Here's the thing: the Puranas' depiction of the Buddha is anything but flattering, and there was a lot of negative talk about Buddhists in the early days, describing them as evil, tainted, and a symbol to be avoided. Even dreaming about them is unlucky. Therefore, although Buddha is considered an avatar of Vishnu, he is never worshiped in a Vishnu temple.

Viewing Buddha as an incarnation of Vishnu is a strategy to subordinate Buddhism to Hinduism. This method is also used by Buddhists. Buddhist texts tell the story of Theravada Vajra, where Hruka, the incarnation of Vajrapani, became angry with Shiva Mahabhara and crushed him under his left foot, destroying him. He then resurrected Shiva and his consorts as Uma Maheshwara, gave them a new name, Bhairava-Bhairavi, and accepted them into Buddhism as his followers. Religious conflict is also reflected in the many images of angry Buddhist Tantric deities trampling Hindu gods and vice versa.

Crow Betty continued:

Early Buddhism valued reality, denied the divine creation of the world, and advocated the origin of the four surnames. The Buddha's practice of "interpretation of the world" was deeply popular and was a substantial blow to the early Brahmanical beliefs, which were dominated by Aryans.

After the birth of Hinduism, it encountered strong challenges from Buddhism. The challenge to Buddhism came from the time of Ashoka. After Ashoka unified India for the first time, in order to consolidate his power and contain the Aryan powerful, he vigorously supported Buddhism against traditional Hinduism.

Just like Indians are divided into three, six or nine grades, cattle in India are also divided into three, six or nine grades. King Ashoka advocated the idea of "equality for all living beings".

From King Asoka's perspective, in order to establish a unified kingdom and be the king of all people, it is necessary to support the Indian natives to fight against the old aristocratic group, so the explanation that Gautama Buddha is an Indian native is more reasonable.

In the 6th century BC, Sakyamuni founded Buddhism. He opposed Brahman supremacy, denied the authority of Veda, and put forward a series of new theories from the perspective of experience and psychology, such as the theory of dependent origination and the four truths. These theories were refreshing and innovative in an era when the Vedic revelations were believed in and sacrifices to the Almighty were prevalent.

Regardless of whether Gautama Buddha was an Aryan or not, the followers of Buddhism are the lower class people of India. Buddhism is an authentic native religion of India, and its idea of "equality of all living beings" is a natural weapon to suppress the caste hierarchy. On the other hand, Sakyamuni grew up in an Indian environment and received an Indian upbringing. Therefore, his ideas could not have arisen out of thin air without inheritance, nor could they have been influenced by Brahmanism.

In the 6th century BC, Buddhism, as a new religion, first emerged in the Kingdom of Magadha, where Brahmanism was relatively weak. Because Buddhism opposes caste discrimination and promotes the idea of equality, it is very popular among lower castes. Therefore, it has developed rapidly and attracted a large number of Brahmans to convert to Buddhism. During the Mauryan Dynasty (324 BC to 187 BC), with the strong support and promotion of King Ashoka, Buddhism ushered in its development climax. Not only did it become a major religion in India, it also began to spread overseas. King Asoka personally sent his son Mahada to the Island of Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka) to spread Buddhism and succeeded, establishing a Buddhist temple there. Since then, Buddhism has gradually spread to Southeast Asia, Central Asia, China, Japan, North Korea, and Vietnam, and developed into a world religion.

The rise and rapid development of Buddhism had a huge impact on Brahmanism at that time, and also had a profound impact on it.

Crow Betty sighed:

It's just that Ashoka's career did not last, because soon after Ashoka's death, India was divided. Buddhism, which symbolizes India's native sect, gradually declined in the game with Hinduism founded by the Aryans, and was eventually submerged in the dust of history. The Nalando Temple where Tang Sanzang studied for Buddhist scriptures eventually fell.

The process of the decline of Buddhism implies the suppression of the conquered lands by the conquerors, that is, the suppression of the indigenous culture and ideology of India by the Aryans. The competition between Buddhism and Hinduism is equivalent to the competition between local religions and religions created by outsiders. The fall of Buddhism means that the Indian natives have given up on the idea of "equality" and their spirits have been completely conquered. Looking at the history of world religions, among the larger religions, only Buddhism has been extinguished in its homeland.

Crow Betty sang "Prayer to the Buddha":

According to Hindu teachings,

The world has a cyclical pattern,

Follow birth, abiding and passing away.

But the world is rotten,

and begins to be destined to be reborn,

Its demise should be hastened.

The Buddha appeared at the right time,

accelerator in the cycle chain,

This is how the world changes.

There should be no hierarchy between humans and animals;

All things are born equal,

Pray for the Buddha to show his power.
