Dawa

Dawa

After the old man Lavani met Agudengba by chance, the two got to know each other very happily. Before Aguden Bajo bid farewell, the old man Lavani finally told his life story. It turned out that he was a Tibetan who had been exiled to Bangladesh due to the war. He has three wives. Polygamy is practiced in Bangladesh, but wives must pay taxes. In order to avoid taxes, Lavani did not legally register her marriage because she was poor, so she only had a cohabitation relationship with her three wives. The three cohabitants are the disabled girl Baima he took in, and the mother and daughter Nima and Dawa, the victims who escaped from the prostitute island. In order to worry that the prostitute island's slutty old madam would send someone to capture Dawa. Dawa's mother, Nima and Pema, made an agreement with the old man Lavani: let Dawa follow Agudengba to fly far away, hoping that with the help of Agudengba, he could learn more knowledge and let Dawa have a better life. .

When Agudenba came to Lavani's home, Lavani asked Dawa, Nyima, and Pema to pay their respects to Agudenba.

Agudengba saw Pema sitting in a wheelchair. Pema and Nima both looked to be in their early 40s. Dawa was about 15 years old. She escaped from the prostitute island when she was 13 years old.

Old Lavani took Dawa's hand and said to Agudengba: I had no choice but to leave Tibet, but Tibet has always been in my heart. I want Dawa to follow you to Tibet. She can be your companion, both to take care of you and to learn more from you. Dawa has lived on that island since he was a child. There are some women on the island who were abducted there. Among them are some geishas who are proficient in dance and music. Among them is a girl named Yadan, whose father is a famous musician in Myanmar. At home, Yadan was kidnapped by robbers during a music and dance performance held by his father and sent to a prostitute island. Yadan regarded Dawa as a younger sister and often taught her some music and dance knowledge. Dear Mr. Agudemba, I believe you will not dislike Dawa.

Agudumba looked at Dawa carefully. Indian women usually dress very conservatively and are often wrapped very tightly on the road, often with only one pair of eyes exposed. Although you can't tell their appearance clearly, Indian women are more attractive. In fact, a long time ago, people from many Western countries came to live in India. Therefore, many people in India have some Western ancestry, and their appearance naturally has Western characteristics. Moreover, mixed-race children originally have a more prominent appearance, with very upright facial features. Therefore, such an appearance is naturally in line with European and American aesthetics. In addition, India is relatively close to the equator, so Indian skin is generally wheat-colored, and Indians do not like white and tender skin like the Chinese. Therefore, almost none of the Indians Agudumba saw in India were fair and tender. Of course, India is not all beautiful people. People in South India are basically indigenous people, that is to say, there is basically no mixed blood, and the appearance of the indigenous Indians is not very outstanding. Only North Indians are more beautiful, because the people in this area are of mixed race, and their bodies and looks have Western characteristics. Bangladesh originally belonged to northern India, so there are indeed many beautiful women here. Dawa belongs to this category. Her mother is of mixed Indian and British descent.

Agudumba said to Dawa:

As far as I know, since ancient times, Bangladeshi poetry and songs have been closely linked. Poems are not mainly for reading, but for singing. The poet is also a composer. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore was also a composer. He composed thousands of songs in his life, which are still widely circulated among the people. The music and lyrics of the famous song "Golden Bangladesh" were composed by him.

Dawa said: I like the songs composed by Tagore. But what I like very much are Bangladeshi folk songs. These folk songs are closely related to our lives and can be divided into two categories: labor songs and leisure songs. Labor songs have a regular rhythm and often lead the chorus, while leisure songs include all folk songs except labor chants, including boat songs, snake catcher songs, religious songs and other varieties.

Agudemba did not expect Dawa to have such an insight into the concert.

Dawa continued:

I have lived on an island since I was a child and have a special interest in Bangladeshi boat songs. Bangladeshi boat song is a kind of lyrical song with long melody and wide range. Because there are many rivers in Bangladesh, boats are the main means of transportation for people. When the boat goes down the river, the boatmen like to sing barge songs. Bangladesh is located in the tropics and there are many venomous snakes. In the past, many people made a living by catching snakes. In addition to catching snakes and treating people bitten by venomous snakes, snake catchers often bring a hugely venomous cobra for performances. A ceremony to worship the snake god is held every year. The snake catcher's song called "Jiapan" is sung during performances and sacrifices.

Agudumba aroused great interest in Dawa. He asked: Dawa, if you really follow me all over the world, won't you worry about your mother?

Dawa did not answer directly, but turned her attention to her mother Nima. Nima clasped her hands and said to Agudengba:

Don't worry about us, sir. It is the most normal thing for men to get married when they are older and for women to get married when they are older. We live in Bangladesh and there has never been any tradition of raising children to provide for old age. Our children here know how to live independently from an early age. Dawa has grown up and she should choose her own life. Mr. Lavani was very kind and saved Pema and me, as well as Dawa. Mr. Lavani told us that you are a well-informed wise man and you have a kind heart. We all believe that if Dawa follows you, he will definitely change the fate of poverty and find true happiness and joy. I hope sir will not reject us.

Agudumba then asked Dawa: Do you have any requirements? Hope I can help you.

Dawa hesitated and said:

Where will your husband go after leaving Bangladesh?

Agudengba said: I am going to go back to Tibet and pray for Mr. Lavani under the Himalayas. It is the hometown he misses day and night.

Dawa said: The journey from Bangladesh to Tibet is long, mainly due to winding mountain roads and severe cold weather. But we can go to Myanmar first, and then transfer to Tibet from Myanmar. The road is relatively flat. I want to go to Myanmar to find Yadan's father. Yadan was kind to me. She has lost contact with her father since she was abducted and taken to the island. If her father knew his daughter's information, he would definitely save her from the island. His father is a celebrity in Myanmar.

Agudemba agreed to Dawa's request.

Dawa happily danced the boat dance, and the old man Lavani sang "Bangladesh Boat Song" with Nima and Pema:

Woohoo~

Nima rises in the east

Baima blooms in the river

You paddle the boat

I pull up the sail in my heart

The boat is swaying in the wind

Woohoo~

Happiness is just ahead

Happiness is with you on the road

you are my savior

I am your lifelong partner

We will stand together through thick and thin

Woohoo~

I'll wander the world with you

You and I are in love

The long, lightless night

I am the moon beside you

you are my warm sun

Chasing the waves against the wind and rain

Crossing the Yarlung Zangbo River

The boat sails to the snowy holy land

Himalayas are my home

Woohoo~

The win

d blows my heart sails

The boat will take you and me to a distant place

That is the paradise of reincarnation

There is our dream

Woohoo~

Woohoo~woohoo~

Lavani old man

Lavani old man

After Christmas is New Year's Day. On Christmas Eve, old man Lavani told Agudengba: I will say goodbye to you because I want to send the white tiger to the White Tiger Villa. The white tiger's injury has basically healed, and it should Returned to his own place of destination.

Agudengba was very surprised, but also very helpless. Starting from Tibet, he traveled to India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. He wanted to understand the history and culture of the Western Regions. When he first set foot on the land of Bangladesh, he encountered a white tiger. Of course, he was very scared at the time. Unexpectedly, this white tiger actually has its own temporary owner, that is old man Lavani. The old man Lavani told Agudengba that the white tiger was injured and that he had adopted and rescued him. The white tiger was also considerate and very grateful to him.

After Agudengba met the old man Lavani by chance, the old man Lavani took the initiative to accompany Agudengba to travel to many places in Bangladesh, and also told him about the history, culture, and religion of Bangladesh, including the economy, humanities, and customs. Old Lavani has a wide range of knowledge and there is almost nothing he doesn’t know. However, Agudengba did not understand the life experience and occupation of the old man Lavani, because the old man always avoided talking about it.

When the old man Lavani was about to part with Agudengba, the old man finally told Agudengba his experience.

It turns out that Mr. Lavani is not a Bangladeshi in the traditional sense. His ancestral home is in Tibet. Later, due to the war, he fled to India and later stayed in Bangladesh. At that time, he had nothing and no occupation, and was a poor wanderer.

Old Lavani later joined a smuggling team, which often sailed out to sea to engage in small business in Southeast Asia. He also heard a lot of historical legends about South Asia and East Asia.

Old Lavani said: I am not officially married, but I have three wives. Since polygamy is practiced in Bangladesh, it is not illegal for me to have three wives. But according to local law, a man needs to pay taxes when he marries a wife. The more wives he has, the more taxes he pays. I am a poor man, how can I have money to get a wife? In order to satisfy my physical desires and have a little money, I went to the prostitute island to vent my emotions. Later, I met a wandering woman with a broken leg. She could no longer make a living by picking up customers. Out of sympathy and to satisfy my own desires, I took her in and have been living with her until now. She treats me well, but she doesn't have the ability to help me with more housework. But I don't have time to take care of her. I have to go to sea to make money at any time.

Old Lavani continued sadly:

In order to relieve my pain and find friends who could talk to her, my wife suddenly found a beautiful girl for me, who was only 13 years old at the time. The girl begged me, hoping to be my wife and willing to serve me for the rest of her life. I was very surprised. Later, I learned that the girl’s mother was also a prostitute on Prostitute Island. She was unable to accept clients because she had a sexually transmitted disease, so the madam forced her daughter to accept clients. Do you know what a bustard is? The old bustard, also known as the turtle father, the bustard mother, the godly woman, the turtle woman, and the old prostitute, is the actual female operator of the brothel, or the prostitute agent. The "old" in "老鸨" represents a skilled person, and "bustard" is a bird that can walk but not fly. The girl's mother did not want her daughter to repeat her fate, so she persuaded her daughter to escape from the prostitute island. In this way, with the help of my wife, the girl escaped from the prostitute island and came to me, becoming my second cohabitant. I secretly picked up the girl's mother through a friend who was overseas, and I helped her cure her sexually transmitted diseases. She became my third wife.

When the old man Lavani said this, he stared at Agudengba with pleading eyes and said: I gave the girl a Tibetan name "Dawa" and gave her mother a name "Nima".

Agudengpa smiled: In the eyes of Tibetans, "Dawa" represents the moon; "Nima" represents the sun. Mr. Lavani, what is your eldest wife's name? Did you also choose a Tibetan name?

Old Lavani also smiled: You are right, I named her "Baima". Agudengba was delighted: Pema, this refers to the lotus. Ah, the lotus is a symbol of good fortune and can also mean "coming out of the mud without being stained."

Old Lavani said seriously to Agudengba:

I left Tibet reluctantly, but Tibet has always been in my heart. I want Dawa to follow you to Tibet. She can be your companion, both to take care of you and to learn more from you. I'm worried that the slutty old madam from Prostitute Island will send someone to capture Dawa. Dawa's mother Nima gets along well with Pema and she can take care of Pema. I have been hired by White Tiger Villa to take care of the white tiger, and I have no time to spend with them. I asked Dawa to follow you so that she can have a better life. Please don't refuse my request.

Old Lavani sang a Tibetan folk song "My Home is in Tibet":

I am calling every month and every year

I pray day and night

I always sing the song of homesickness in my heart

That is a longing that can never be forgotten

oh

I often dream about the Himalayas

I often miss the Brahmaputra River

Yalaso

Beautiful Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

The majestic Potala Palace

Dawa and Nima in my heart

The moon and sun that never set

Yalaso

That's the hometown I care about

Yalaso

That's where the white horse blooms

A century-old brothel that cannot be demolished

A century-old brothel that cannot be demolished

Agudemba asked old man Lavani: For girls who are prostitutes in Kandapara Village, the triple pressure of debt, medicine and survival has formed heavy shackles, binding the women in Kandapara Village. In an era when women's rights are strongly supported, is there no one to rescue these girls who have been sexually exploited?

Lavani said: In Bangladesh, conscientious officials certainly do not allow the existence of prostitute villages, but the reality is that the resistance is too great and it is difficult to save the suffering girls.

Mukti, the governor of Tangail district where Kandapara village is located, could not tolerate the existence of the village. Since 2014, he had given frequent public speeches, criticizing the village for corrupting public order and good customs and polluting the environment.

Soon after, Mukti ordered the destruction of this cancer. He made insufficient preparations for this. While ordering the powerful departments to prepare for the demolition of the prostitute village, he also set up a special committee. The committee's job is to respond to potential demonstrations and guide media public opinion. Although Mukti's earnest speech sought public support, public opinion does not seem to be overwhelmingly supportive of the government's actions.

The opposition parties and some unscrupulous media will seize every opportunity to cause trouble. Soon some media published tendentious reports, exaggerating that the "century-old brothel" was in crisis and that Mukti planned to seize the brothel's assets...

On July 12, a group of people gathered outside Kandapara village. They claimed to be subordinates of the mayor and were implementing Chief Mukti's request to demolish the brothel.

It's hard to say whether the identities of this group of people are true or false. If they are true, they are definitely a type of people who have little success and more than failure. They act too roughly.

The gang threatened the people in the village that if the brothel workers did not leave immediately, they would lock the village gates and set everything on fire!

True to their word, the gang brought two barrels of gasoline at night, cut off the electricity supply to the village, and entered the village heavily armed to enforce the law violently. No, maybe their behavior is not even considered violent law enforcement. It should be called "japs entering the village."

They searched house to house, robbed the madam's property, raped the prostitute, and even set fire to the house while the woman cried. Fortunately, there were only two barrels of gasoline, so everything was not burned down.

Such demolition of Kandapara village triggered strong opposition from various organizations. The sex worker group in Kandapara Village and the Bangladesh Sex Workers Website took the lead in launching protests. News and human rights organizations also came out to oppose it, such as the National Press Club and Action Aid.

The most puzzling thing is that UNAIDS also came out to oppose it. It would have been understandable if it had just objected to the brutality of the law enforcement agencies, but the Planning Department demanded that sex workers be allowed to return to Kandapara village.

Women's organizations have also not played a good role. At the end of 2014, the National Women's Lawyers Association filed a lawsuit in court, directly accusing the government of illegally deporting sex workers.

In any case, Mukti cannot get rid of the blame for rough law enforcement. But compared to the way he enforces the law, his biggest problem is that he is not prepared to deal with the prostitutes in Kandapara village.

The prostitutes were unable to make a living by doing other jobs, so they submitted proof of "voluntary" sex work to the court. In the end, the court ruled that the prostitutes should be allowed to return to the village and continue to work.

After the court's ruling, a group of non-governmental organizations came on stage. They helped rebuild the village of Kandapara and carefully maintained the original layout so that the prostitutes could return to their original living conditions as quickly as possible.

Is prostitution also a legitimate rights and interests of women? If it were in Europe, this issue might be debated among the benevolent and the wise, but it was definitely not worth discussing in Kandapara Village.

The farce came to an end, the "Century-old Brothel" continued to operate as usual, and its status became more stable. Mukti worked hard for a year and became a different person inside and outside.

How can we save those suffering girls? Agudenba fell into deep thought.

Old Lavani said: No one can change the poor fate of these women. Kandapara is not the only prostitute village in Bangladesh, there are similar villages in neighboring India. Such a village is not tolerated by secular morality, let alone religious transactions, but it can stubbornly exist for more than a hundred years. Do you know why this is so?

Agudemba could not answer.

Old Lavani said:

The reasons that most easily come to mind are women's low status and poverty. In fact, prostitution is a very old profession. After entering the private ownership society, many women became men's playthings and were bought, sold and traded. The lower a woman's status, the more serious the situation of being bought and sold.

In order to improve the status of women, the government of Bangladesh, an Islamic country, has signed a series of international mechanisms to promote gender equality, formulated laws to recognize and protect women's rights, and implemented policies to improve women's working and living conditions. Bangladesh's efforts have achieved certain results. The "Global Gender Gap Report 2021" pointed out that the country is in a leading position among South Asian countries in narrowing the gender gap.

But these are not enough. Long-term concepts cannot be changed by a few laws. Improvements in local areas and individual positions do not mean that the problem has been solved. It is impossible that the elites of Bangladesh are unaware of the cruelty of sexual exploitation, but people represented by the National Association of Women Lawyers still condone Kandapara village.

Poverty is the biggest problem. In order to survive, a large number of women have to enter the porn industry. Bangladesh has no mines and oil underground, and frequent floods on the ground. There is no decent industry at home, and there is no big country to rely on abroad. However, the population is as high as 160 million in a territory of 140,000 square kilometers. Bangladesh is the poorest country in South Asia.

The government's role is the most critical in controlling poverty in developing countries, but the Bangladesh government has not played its due role. The government does not have enough funds, and the investment it makes in poverty alleviation is very small each time, and cannot be made on a sustained basis. Due to the inefficiency of the political system, limited funds have not played their maximum role.

Bangladesh is not without insightful people, and successive governments have formulated plans that look great. However, excellent plans require strong execution and strict supervision, but Bangladesh has serious shortcomings in execution, so that most of the previous governments lacked outstanding performance.

The government's mediocre performance in the past has caused the public to lose trust in the government little by little, further making it more difficult for the government to control poverty.

In recent years, the Bangladeshi government has made great efforts to strengthen itself and achieved certain achievements in economic construction. It takes advantage of the abundant and cheap domestic labor force, abundant raw materials and cheap land to develop textile industry OEM. Using per capita GDP as an indicator, the country has entered the ranks of low-income and middle-income countries from low-income countries. However, the problem of the huge gap between the rich and the poor has not been resolved. Unemployment is still increasing. The number of poor people has decreased, but people's income has generally decreased. The simultaneous growth of GDP, poverty and unemployment means that social inequality is increasing.

Considering the political system, the concentration of wealth to a few people will also lead to the concentration of power to a few people, making it more difficult to protect the rights of women and poor people in marginalized areas.

What do poor, poor women do for a living? More and more people make a living by selling their bodies, creating prostitute villages like Kandapara one after another.

Even if Mukti's campaign to demolish "century-old brothels" succeeds, it will not prevent the resurgence of brothel villages in the future. It is understandable if you look at the lawsuit filed by the National Women's Lawyers Association, the court's decision, and the actions of NGOs to rebuild prostitute villages. In the face of evil deeds, legalize them if they cannot be banned, and always leave a way for the people to survive. This is the political philosophy under the "democratic" system.

Is the future of Bangladesh capable of solving these problems? I'm afraid no one can give a definite answer.

Old Lavani accompanied Agudengba and said: When we came to a farmland, we saw no farmers working in the farmland, but there was a burst of desolate and sad and angry singing. Old man Lavani said that it was a new rural song "Looking for My Home" compiled by local netizens:

Only by understanding who you are

Not when I have the chance to embrace the world

lost myself

In the process of finding a sense of belonging

I'm looking for my home

Only by understanding this world

Not when it is full of cunning and deceit

stupid and ignorant

In the search for truth, goodness and beauty in life

I'm looking for my home

Only by understanding this society

Not when money and beauty pollute

Struggle with fame and fortune

In the search for happiness

I'm looking for my home

Only by understanding that life is short

So that I won’t get lost in the noisy world of mortals

I just want to go home

My heart is always tied to my hometown

My home is where I belong
