The Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore) is Florence's most famous building and the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Florence. It is the fourth largest cathedral in Europe, after St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and Milan Cathedral. The Baptistery of St. John of Florence is one of the city's oldest surviving buildings, constructed between 1059 and 1128. Its mysterious origins and the many dramatic events associated with it are quite fascinating. The Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, one of Florence's most famous churches, is a Dominican basilica located in Piazza Santa Maria Novella. It houses priceless art treasures. The Basilica of Santa Croce is one of the largest Franciscan churches and one of the largest Gothic buildings in Italy. Numerous of Italy's most outstanding artists, writers, and scientists are buried in the Basilica of Santa Croce, including Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Rossini, and Marconi, earning it the nickname "Italy's Pantheon."
